Every piece of hotel lobby seating is built on a contract frame — kiln-dried hardwood or reinforced metal — engineered and tested to ANSI/BIFMA X5.4, the standard that covers lounge and public seating with back-durability and leg-strength testing. Seat platforms use serpentine springs or webbing for resilient, long-lasting support, and joints are corner-blocked, glued and mechanically fixed rather than stapled. This is the part that separates a contract lobby sofa from a residential one: it is built to take constant use without the frame loosening or the seat collapsing.
Foam & comfort
Seat comfort comes from high-resilience (HR) or CMHR foam at around 40 kg/m³ and 45 ILD, which holds its shape rather than flattening within a season. Firmness is tuned to the job: deep, softer seats for the sofas and lounge chairs where guests settle for a longer dwell, and firmer, more upright cushioning for benches and seating near the bar or check-in where stays are short. Loose scatter cushions add comfort and a layer of brand colour to the lounge.
Upholstery & durability
Upholstery is the part that has to survive daily use and cleaning.
• Abrasion: contract fabric, vinyl or leather rated to 50,000 Martindale rubs, rising to 80,000–100,000+ for the busiest lobbies — against roughly 15,000 for residential cloth.
• Performance textiles: brands such as Crypton and Sunbrella Contract, plus performance vinyl and contract leather, chosen to resist stains, wipe clean and hold colour.
• Fire: EN 1021-1 and 1021-2 with BS 7176 for Europe and the UK, or CAL TB 117-2013 for the United States — tested as a foam-and-fabric composite, with documentation supplied.
