Every office is planned around the desk. It sets the grid the floor is laid out on, decides how many people fit in a footprint, and carries the monitors, the documents and the cabling that the work actually runs on. A desk is judged in a showroom on its colour and in service on three things the colour hides: the worktop core, the edge, and the frame. These are where a contract desk earns its keep and where a budget desk gives itself away within a year.
The worktop is a laminate or melamine-faced surface over a board core, and the grade of that core is what matters. A contract top uses a dense, moisture-resistant board that stays flat and resists the dints and scratches of daily equipment, where a thin or low-density core sags between supports and chips at the first knock. The facing is specified for wear and for look — a hard-wearing laminate in the colours and woodgrains to match the scheme, chosen to take years of mugs, keyboards and document trays without marking.
The edge is the most abused part of any desk and the quickest tell of quality. A contract desk is finished with a thick ABS or PVC edge band, impact-resistant and bonded to take the constant contact of chairs, knees and trolleys; a cheap desk uses a thin tape that peels and lifts at the corners. On a busy floor the edge detail is not cosmetic — it is what stops the desk looking tired six months in.
The frame decides rigidity and the look of the desk underneath. Panel-end frames give a solid, enclosed look and built-in modesty; A-frame and cantilever legs give a lighter, more open feel and easy access for cabling; bench frames carry whole runs of desks on a shared structure. Whichever system, a contract frame is engineered so the desk does not rack or wobble when leaned on, with levelling feet to sit flat on an uneven floor. Built from standard, replaceable parts, a contract desk can be re-topped or re-legged and kept in service far longer than a sealed flat-pack unit that is scrapped at the first failure.

The executive desk is a different brief from the workstation, and one of the most-searched desks there is. It belongs in the director's office, the partner's room and the management suite, where the desk is a statement as much as a surface — larger, more substantial, and finished to a standard the open floor does not need. Where a workstation is chosen for density and value, an executive desk is chosen for presence: a generous worktop in wood veneer or a high-grade laminate, clean detailing, and the weight to anchor a senior room.
A proper executive desk is a small suite rather than a single piece. It is usually specified with a return to wrap the work around the user, a desk-high pedestal of drawers, and a matching credenza behind for storage and a display surface — all in the same finish so the office reads as one designed room. An L-shaped executive desk gives the same effect where the corner suits it. Worktops are specified in the laminate colours and woodgrains to match the interior — light or dark, warm or neutral — with a coordinated edge band, so reception, management and the open floor read as one palette.
