What Makes It Contract
A filing cabinet looks simple and is the easiest piece of furniture to get dangerously wrong. Loaded with paper it is one of the heaviest things on the floor, and the parts that keep it safe and working are exactly where a budget unit cuts corners.
The carcass carries the load. A contract cabinet uses a rigid steel body or a dense laminate-faced board that stays square under the weight of full suspension files; a thin-gauge or low-density carcass bows, and once it bows the drawers bind. The drawer runners are the moving parts that earn their keep every day — full-extension, ball-bearing runners rated to the loaded drawer weight let a drawer pull all the way out smoothly so the back files are reachable, where cheap roller runners stick, sag and eventually drop the drawer.
The detail that matters most for safety is the anti-tilt interlock. A loaded filing cabinet with two drawers open at once will tip forward and fall — a genuine hazard on a busy floor. An anti-tilt mechanism allows only one drawer to open at a time, and on taller units a counterweight or floor-fixing keeps the cabinet planted. This is standard on our cabinets and is the single thing a procurement team should confirm on any storage they buy, because it is the difference between a cabinet and an accident.
Filing itself has to be engineered in. A drawer made for suspension files takes foolscap or A4 filing bars, front-to-back or side-to-side, so folders hang and slide rather than slump; lateral cabinets do the same across a wider drawer. And because contract storage is built from standard, replaceable parts — a lock barrel, a runner set, a handle — a floor of cabinets stays matched and serviceable for years rather than being scrapped at the first failure.
