Overview
A hotel wall bed — known just as widely as a Murphy bed, a fold-down bed, a fold-away bed or a hidden bed — is a full-size bed mounted to a counterbalanced frame that lifts and folds flat into a cabinet against the wall. When it is up, the floor it stood on is given back to the room; when it is down, the guest sleeps on a proper mattress, not a thin cushion. That single trick is why the wall bed has become a core piece of contract guest-room furniture wherever a square metre of floor carries a nightly rate.
The economics are simple and they are what bring operators to us. A studio that can present as a lounge by day and a bedroom by night sells a different, often higher, product than a room with a permanent bed taking up two-thirds of the floor. An aparthotel that fits a queen wall bed into a living area adds a sleeping berth without adding a room. A meeting room that hides its beds becomes bookable for events. The wall bed is the joinery that makes a dual-use room genuinely dual-use, and in a contract setting it has to do that thousands of times without complaint.
We manufacture wall beds as complete, made-to-size units — cabinet, counterbalanced mechanism, sprung platform and mattress retention — finished to coordinate with the rest of the guest-room scheme. Every unit is engineered for single-person operation, because the person opening and closing it most is housekeeping, and fixed for safety against the structural wall. What leaves our Istanbul workshops is a contract product, not a flat-pack consumer item adapted for hotel use.

Clearing Up the Terms
The names cause confusion at the specification stage, so it helps to settle them before you brief a project.
Wall bed and Murphy bed mean the same thing. "Murphy bed" is the older, genericised American term, named after the original folding-bed patent; "wall bed" is the description used across most of the world. Fold-down bed, fold-away bed, pull-down bed, hidden bed and cabinet bed are all the same category. Whatever your fire strategy, designer or purchasing platform calls it, the product is one mattress on a counterbalanced frame that stows vertically or horizontally into a case. We use "wall bed" and "Murphy bed" interchangeably throughout, and we build to whichever name your schedule carries.
A wall bed is not a sofa bed, and the difference matters when you order. A sofa bed is a piece of seating that converts — you start with a sofa and unfold a mattress out of it. A wall bed is the reverse: you start with a bed and fold it away into the wall, with no seating function unless you add a sofa to the front. Choose a wall bed when the priority is a real, full-depth mattress and a room that clears completely during the day; choose a convertible sofa when the priority is permanent, comfortable seating that occasionally has to sleep a guest. The standard hotel wall bed. The mattress folds head-to-foot so the bed stows along its length, taking the least wall width — ideal where the room is narrow but the ceiling is normal height. The headboard end sits at the floor when closed and the foot lifts to the top of the cabinet. This is the most space-efficient orientation for single and double rooms and is the default unless ceiling height forces otherwise.

The single most important mattress rule for any fold-down bed is depth. Because the mattress folds with the frame, it has to sit inside a depth limit — usually 25 to 30 cm — and be held by a retention strap so it cannot slide when the bed is lifted. Within that limit we supply FR-rated foam or pocket-sprung mattresses to a contract spec, and crucially they are replaceable: when a mattress reaches the end of its life it is swapped without touching the mechanism, exactly as you would expect from a permanent hotel bed. Bespoke sizes, non-standard mattress depths and your own bed standard are all accommodated to order.

Mechanism
The counterbalance is the heart of the unit. We specify either a gas-piston system, which holds the bed at any point and gives the lightest single-person lift, or a spring counterbalance, which is robust and serviceable in the field. Both are rated for high cycle counts so the bed survives daily housekeeping use for years.

Cabinet & Case
The case is built from contract-grade melamine-faced board or veneered panel on an engineered carcass, with a concealed steel sub-frame carrying the mechanism loads. The visible faces are finished to coordinate with the room's other joinery, so the closed bed reads as a wardrobe or media wall, not as a folded bed.
Platform & Mattress Retention
A sprung slatted platform supports the mattress and helps it breathe. A retention strap holds the mattress in place through the fold so nothing shifts on lifting, and the platform is sized to your chosen mattress depth within the fold limit.
Fixing & Anti-Tip Safety
Wall-mounted units are anchored to the structural wall with anti-tip fixings rated for the unit; free-standing cabinets carry their stability in the case. Every unit is built and tested so it cannot be pulled over in use — a non-negotiable in any contract specification.
Finish & Coordination
Because we also make the wardrobes, headboards and case goods in the room, the wall-bed cabinet can be matched to them in laminate, veneer or lacquer. Sample doors and finish boards are produced for sign-off before any production run.
Specify Correctly
A wall bed is the one piece of guest-room furniture that moves under load, so it is specified more like equipment than like joinery. The points below are the ones that separate a contract Murphy bed from a domestic one, and they are where a purchasing team should focus the conversation.
Operation must suit housekeeping
The person who opens and closes the bed most is not the guest — it is housekeeping, many times a day. The mechanism is chosen so one person can raise and lower it smoothly without strain, with a damped descent that cannot drop, and support legs that deploy on their own.
Anti-tip fixing is mandatory, not optional
A bed that folds up carries its weight high when closed. Wall-mounted units are anchored into structure and free-standing units are weighted and braced in the case, so the unit stays put whether it is open, closed or mid-cycle. Ask any supplier how their anti-tip is achieved and tested.
Mattress depth and retention
The mattress lives within the fold, so its depth is capped — usually 25 to 30 cm — and it is held by a retention strap. A mattress that is too deep will not fold cleanly and a mattress that is not retained will shift. Both are specification details, not afterthoughts.
Cycle rating and serviceability
In a hotel the bed is cycled far more than at home, so the mechanism is rated for high cycle counts and chosen to be serviceable in the field — a gas piston or spring that can be replaced in the room rather than the whole unit being swapped out.
