Overview
The restaurant chair is the most-specified, most-handled and most-visible item on any dining floor — and the one that fails first when it is bought wrong. A guest forms an impression of the room before the menu arrives, largely from the chair they sit in; and that same chair is then pulled, pushed, leaned back on and wiped down dozens of times a day, every day, for years. A domestic dining chair is simply not built for that. HFC manufactures a dedicated range of commercial restaurant chairs — dining chairs, café chairs and bistro chairs — in solid wood and metal, engineered for the contract duty cycle while carrying the look the venue is selling.
This page covers the indoor seating that defines a dining room, in two material families. Wooden restaurant chairs — in solid beech, oak and ash — bring warmth and a classic or design-led look, from bentwood café chairs to cross-back and ladder-back dining chairs and fully upholstered frames. Metal restaurant chairs — in electrostatic-painted steel and aluminium — deliver an industrial, contemporary or French-bistro aesthetic with exceptional durability and easy cleaning. Both are offered as side chairs and armchairs, with or without upholstery, and in stacking versions for venues that clear the floor each night. Every frame, joint and finish is specified for commercial use, not domestic price.
A note on scope, so you land on the right page. This is the home of indoor restaurant and café dining chairs. Bar- and counter-height seating has its own bar & counter stools page — that is where stools belong, kept separate so heights and ergonomics stay correct. Fixed bench and booth seating is on the booths & banquette seating page; the tables these chairs pull up to, and full table-and-chair sets, are on the restaurant tables page; and outdoor café and bistro chairs for terraces and pavements live in the weather-rated commercial outdoor furniture range. This page belongs to the wider restaurant furniture category, which furnishes the whole dining room from one factory.

Contract Build
From the floor a restaurant chair looks like any other; the difference is everything you cannot see. These are the points that decide whether a chair lasts five seasons or fails in one.
— Engineered joints: Contract chairs are built with mechanical, reinforced joints designed to resist the constant racking force of being leaned back on — not simply glued and dowelled like domestic chairs, which loosen and wobble within a season.
— Frame rated for the load: Solid beech, oak and ash, or electrostatic-painted steel and aluminium, sized for repeated commercial loading rather than occasional home use.
— Fire-rated, rub-tested upholstery: Where seats and backs are padded, the fabric or faux leather is flame-retardant and carries a high rub-count (Martindale/Wyzenbeek) for years of daily use, and wipes clean between covers.
— Stackability: Many wood and metal styles stack, cutting nightly clear-down labour and letting staff clear a floor for cleaning or private events. Confirm stack height for your storage.
— Floor-protecting glides: Quality glides protect both the chair feet and the floor, and keep the room quieter as chairs are moved.
— Repairable & re-orderable: Seats can be re-upholstered and finishes reproduced, so a chair is maintained rather than discarded, and a re-order years later still matches the floor.
✦
The joint is the chair
Almost every restaurant chair that fails does so at the joint, where the back meets the seat and takes the leverage of a leaning guest. It is the single most important thing to specify — and the one a low price quietly removes.
Materials
Both material families are built to contract standard; the choice is about look, weight, maintenance and the concept. Here is how they compare for a restaurant floor.
✦
Many rooms mix both
A common, effective approach pairs warm wooden chairs at the tables with metal-framed chairs as accents, or matches a wood frame to a metal-legged table. As one manufacturer we coordinate the finishes so a mixed scheme reads as deliberate, not accidental.
Where It Works
The right chair changes with the concept — comfort and finish at one end, durability and turnover at the other.
— Fine dining & hotel restaurants: Upholstered wood-frame chairs and carver armchairs for comfort over a long sitting, in premium timbers and fire-rated fabrics.
— Casual dining & bistro: Cross-back and ladder-back wooden chairs, or industrial metal side chairs — characterful, durable and efficient, the workhorse of full-service dining.
— Café & coffee shop: Lightweight bentwood and stacking café chairs that clean fast, move easily and pack down for tight, high-turnover floors.
— Brasserie & bistro fronts: French bistro metal chairs and bentwood classics that set an unmistakable café tone.
— Multi-outlet hotels & groups: A coordinated chair family across a restaurant, café and breakfast room, specified and re-ordered from one source.
Specification Guide
Five checks our hospitality clients run before committing a chair order.
1 — Specify for the duty cycle, and check the joint
Confirm engineered, reinforced joints and a frame rated for commercial loading. The joint where back meets seat is where chairs fail — it is the spec that matters most, and the one a low price removes.
2 — Get upholstery fire-rated and rub-tested
Padded seats and backs must use flame-retardant fabric or faux leather with a high rub-count. Confirm both certifications up front — they are a compliance and durability requirement.
3 — Match seat height to your tables
Standard dining seat height suits standard tables; confirm the relationship so guests sit comfortably. Counter- and bar-height seating is a separate product on the bar & counter stools page.
4 — Decide on stacking early
If the floor is cleared nightly or for events, specify stackable styles and confirm stack height against your storage. It is an operating-cost decision worth making at the start.
5 — Order spares and record the finish
Order 5–10% spare chairs and keep the stain, coating colour and fabric on file, so a damaged chair years later is replaced with an identical one rather than a near-match.
Across the Restaurant Range
Chairs are the start. The rest of the restaurant range completes the floor — same factory, same 2-year warranty.
