Overview
In a hospitality setting the bistro table and the cocktail table are the small footprints that carry the social weight of a room. A café terrace lives or dies on its bistro tables; a wedding drinks reception works because there are enough cocktail tables for guests to gather around with a glass in hand. Neither is the low living-room “cocktail table” sold to homes — these are contract-grade pieces built for cafés, hotel terraces, lobby bars and event floors, and made to take daily commercial handling.
The two names point to two heights doing two jobs. A bistro table sits at roughly 75cm, dining height, and pairs with bistro chairs for seated coffee and light meals. A cocktail table — also called a poseur or bar-height table — stands at around 110cm so guests can rest a drink and talk while standing. Folding & storage
How a cocktail table folds decides how it stores, how it ships, whether it needs dressing — and what it costs. There are three commercial types, from a basic fold-flat to a fully knock-down base.
Full fold-flat
Type 1 · Entry-level
Legs fold flat against the underside, so the whole table collapses and leans against a wall or stacks on a trolley. Basic folding legs and the most economical build — a tablecloth is always required, because the frame and top are made to be covered rather than seen.
Fold-top pedestal
Type 2 · Mid-range
A single pedestal column with a fold-down top — self-standing and stackable, so it stores upright without leaning on anything. The pedestal can be specified with height adjustment, which lets the same table work at standing poseur height or drop to seated café height. A tablecloth is optional.
Fully knock-down
Type 3 · Commercial standard
Separate top and base that knock down completely for flat, dense storage and transport. A cross or tulip metal base carries the top, and the surface itself is the presentation — no tablecloth needed. The dominant specification at quality venues.
Tops & materials
The top decides the look and where the table can live. A bistro table for an indoor café has different demands from a cocktail table left out on a terrace, and the range covers both.
HPL Compact
The contract standard top. HPL Compact is a solid, through-colour high-pressure laminate panel — fully waterproof and resistant to scratches, heat, impact and cleaning chemicals, with a clean self-finished edge that needs no banding. Marble-effect & stone
The premium café look. Marble-effect, sintered-stone and genuine stone tops give a round café table that high-end finish without the fragility of a home marble cocktail table. Heavier, so paired with a sturdier base.
Wood & veneer
Warmth for indoor settings. Solid timber and veneer tops suit lounge bars and boutique cafés. Best kept indoors or under cover, where they read warmer than a laminate bistro table.
Shapes & sizes
Round 60, 70 and 80cm, plus square 60–70cm. Round tops suit tight café spacing and standing receptions; square tops push together into rows for longer café runs. Edges are detailed to resist chipping through daily service.
Bases & frames
A small table fails at the base long before the top wears out. A wobbling café table or a poseur table that tips when a guest leans on it is the quickest way to look cheap, so the base is where commercial and domestic tables really part company. The frames here are welded steel, cast iron or aluminium, finished in durable electrostatic paint to match the rest of your banquet furniture, and weighted correctly so the table stays put when it is loaded on one side.
Three base styles cover most needs. A column base on a weighted disc or cross foot is the standard for round bistro tables and cocktail tables, giving maximum legroom with no corner legs to catch a chair. A four-leg frame suits square café tables that sit in tight rows.
